Episode 65 - End of An Error

With perfect timing, I complete the task of listening to one song from every record in my record collection*. This final episode clocks in at 5 hours and represents a sprint to the finish. For your convenience, it is split into 4 parts below. This website now represents a complete archive of my life via the records that I have loved. If a fire or flood destroys my collection, my insurance claim will simply be a matter of cutting and pasting from this website. Thank you for listening.

Part one: French West African jams, Urgh a Music War, silent guest host Jackie Canchola, dance club slander.

Episode 65, Part One, A Complete Abridged Record Collection

Part two: A little bit of rock infidelity, heavy euro hip-hop and mid-western 12" singles.

Episode 65, Part Two, A Complete Abridged Record Collection

Part three: Guest co-host Katie Roetker, Greek New Wave, Greek "New Wave" and comedy rock.

Episode 65, Part Three, A Complete Abridged Record Collection

Part four: A little bit of actual good music and a giant finale of euro hip-house and italo-disco!

Episode 63 - One track mind

Thanks to a recent trip to LA and an amazing 10th anniversary sale at Marriage Records, this episode features records that have been in my collection for less than a week. That being said, some of the memories are ancient, stretching back to some of the first records I ever bought (Railroad Jerk's Bang the Drum). Also, I briefly mention the phrase 'spanning time' and avoid the story about being ALMOST invited to a celebrity birthday party, further confirming that it is still a sore memory.

Episode 62 - Don't Touch My Bikini

Even I'll admit that the music in this episode is wall to wall rock solid. I brought my own record cartridges so that I wouldn't have to deal with the stations miserably damaged ones. I bought some snacks before the show, which always makes for a more relaxed and phlegmy. I had some excellent songs to just sit back and blast to myself. Quite a few memories were skirted over - I could probably fill an hour just talking about Kevin Greenspon or Apollo Ghosts alone, not mention such seminal groups as Key Losers and Halo Benders. All in all, a great episode.

Episode 61 - Show me your motion

Amidst major technical difficulties, I bust out an hour long set of stictly French West African records purchased from a single flee market stall in Athens, Greece. The covers are priceless but the songs aren't half bad either. I lose it a few times due to broken needles (that I just replaced) and failing microphones. OH WELL.

Episode 60 - Skeet, Skat

At this point, my record collection is totally jumbled up, mainly due to the 24 hours DJ set that I did. So I need to go through my collection and find the few remaining records that haven't been played on this show. Here, I am doing that in real time! It is a totally unpleasant and boring task, rightly appropriate for this internet podcast/broadcast!

Episode 58 - Do you remember rock 'n roll radio?

After a five month hiatus of academics, graduation, tripping, DJing for 24 hours straight, traveling and, alas, more record buying, I returned to the studio of KSDT (or KSTD as I call it with specific veteran and criminal staff members in mind) and recorded Episode 58. This is perhaps the most contemporary episode possible, comprising of records purchased during my most recent visit to New Orleans as well as a few surprises and summations of recent life crises.

Episode 57 - DJ Craig Biggio

The four song mini hip-hop set makes this episode somewhat worthwhile. I also go to great lengths to describe this LP cover,

further proof that my command of the word is mediocre at best while my taste in music is somewhere south of questionable (see what I mean?). At least I can cling to the hope of one day being more eloquent than Disco Rick.

Episode 56 - I'm just beginning to live

It the spirit of poor planning as the antithesis of uncool, I play Jonathan Richman's Rockin' and Romance LP for the second time (see Episode 15). In one sense, it is completely legit, as I did buy that LP twice. In the other sense, it is testament to my total lack of resolve. At a certain point my body just begins to crave actual 'good' music over the completeness of my life. This is true for the following reason: I'm sentimental and insist on only remembering the extreme good and extreme bad. Something like "Berlin 1992: A Tresor Comilation" just kinda gets played with zero remarks.

The last song of this episode pretty much sums up the whole reason I started this project. Strong White Male comes off a Mecca Normal LP that I bought in the discount bin from Amoeba about 6 months ago. I will admit that despite blemishes like Episode 52, the music is getting better, the further we go on and the nearer we get to the end. Even the Greek music played in this episode is pretty great. This episode consists mainly of Greek pop songs taken from 1 euro LPs that I bought during a 24hr record shop in Athens 2 years ago. I collated this compilation: Lost Greek Hits, 1978 - 1988 and pretty much never revisited most of these records...until now. This episode features all UNPLAYED records that I picked up during the closing of the Music Trader in Point Loma. There is some serious cosmic force to this black Thursday. On top of self-imposed perceived psychological bleakness, I realized that the records I brought to the show were the same ones that I had played last week, therefore had nothing to play or remember. Luckily, like the silver lining to the horrible toxic rain thundercloud that electrocuted the dude in Caddyshack, I found an great stash of 12"s at the thrift store during lunch, thereby supplementing the show and forever cementing this horrible horrible day in the archive.

Episode 48 - 1981: The Peak of Calypso-Disco

I guess I just need to remind myself that the whole idea behind this was firstly to FORCE myself to listen to all my records over again, one hour per week at a time. I forget that forcing yourself to do anything is discouraging and consequently, get discouraged. Secondly, I'm using this show as a way of cataloging my collection for an insurance agent in the case of fire, flood, earthquake, etc, so it's not like I'm getting NOTHING done.

On what can only be described as a "TERRIBLE DAY" I somehow managed to drag myself into the studio to expose the agony and the ecstasy (my words) of my life. Begin with the epic and cathartic 'Notorious Lightning', which drags my carcass across a full 6 years of doubtful existence. Follow that with the death-knell of Chet, a Taiwanese pressing of The Guess Who found while wandering the hot city of depression, Colin Blunstone's ethereal "Misty Roses", a rare Mutantes track that couldn't even get me the love I need and finish it all off with a side-long High Places 'bleak drone' iced with the elusive hope singing of Mary Pearson.
